“Polyester Bride” by Liz Phair

Liz Phair is absolutely one of my personal heroes because she’s never ashamed of being honest about how she feels. She’s known being very blunt about sex and relationships, and “Polyester Bride” off of her third album, Whitechocolatespaceegg, is full of dry wit and attitude, but you can hear the fact that Liz grew a lot since her debut.

“Seether” by Veruca Salt

I’m seeing Veruca Salt in June! I can’t believe they’re going on tour in 2014. I heard Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden are going on tour together too. Which year is this?? “Seether” is one of my personal favorite Veruca Salt songs. I like how its about the personification of anger in such a beautiful and melodic song.

“I Blame Myself” by Sky Ferreira

Sky Ferreira is Very Controversial because she’s opening for Miley Cyrus and she got arrested with her boyfriend that one time. “I Blame Myself” is a refreshingly blunt song and I’ve always got the vibe that Sky has a bit of a tongue-in-cheek attitude in her lyrics which I think saves the song from being slightly pretentious. It’s one of my favorite songs from Sky’s debut LP, Night Time, My Time.

“Meet the Foetus/Oh the Joy” by Brody Dalle feat. Shirley Manson

I’m seeing Brody Dalle next month in Portland and I can’t wait. She’s such a powerful person and a strong, opinionated, talented and beautiful woman that I can’t even handle how much I respect and admire her. “Meet the Foetus/Oh the Joy” is a collaboration with Shirley Manson, another strong, opionated, talented and beautiful woman. I’m so excited they worked together because this single is really incredible, especially around the 3 minute mark where the guitars really kick in.

“Everybody’s Gonna Let You Down” by the Vaccines

I like to listen to this song when I’m feeling sad and lonely because it’s so apathetic somehow and accepting of the lack of faith the narrator has in the human race. Justin Young also has an incredible voice. I hope you guys are fans of the Vaccines too because you’re going to hear me talk about them again.

“Luv, Hold Me Down” by Drowners

I recently saw Drowners in Portland and I’m still not over it. Thier debut EP, Drowners, is an incredibly strong debut and every song is solid, well written and catchy. They’re also really nice guys. I see absolutely nothing but success and good things coming thier way.

“Bedroom Eyes” by Dum Dum Girls

I saw Dum Dum Girls a few days before the Drowners show last week. They’re a really cool band and Samm is probably more qualified to talk about anything Dum Dum Girls related because she loves them more than I could ever hope to. Dum Dum Girls have an interesting sound that ranges from extremely shoe-gazey to smart bubblegum pop, which is what I’d classify this song as. I listened to it for a day straight after I heard it for the first time and I’m still not tired of it.
